Session Details

The session discusses the life and achievements of the late Kuwaiti businessman, Mohammed Al-Sharekh, the founder and chairman of the board of directors of the "Sharq" computer software company in 1982, which was the first to introduce the Arabic language to computers.

"Sharq" represented the first Arab computer, accompanied by a package of translation programs, the most important of which were the Quran and Hadith translation programs, translated into English, as well as the optical recognition program for Arabic letters, and the "Tarjim" program.

Al-Sharq established the "Book in Newspaper" project in 1997 in collaboration with UNESCO, and was one of the contributors to funding the "Arab Unity Studies Center" and the "Arab Organization for Translation." He was also one of the contributors to the establishment of the "Arab World Institute" in Paris.

In 2016, Al-Sharq began his major project, the "Al-Sharq Archive" for Arab literary and cultural journals, uploading them to the internet. This is an exceptional and significant effort to preserve an important aspect of Arab cultural heritage and make it accessible to millions of Arab researchers and intellectuals.
